There are many disturbing things everyday on the news. While it is important to stay informed about certain things, there are many things that just make us feel tired, angry, and sad. Watching too much of this content disturbs inner peace.

So, what is the way to care about what is happening to people, animals, and the planet but not get sucked into the negativity?

I’m paraphrasing here but Gandhi was once asked to tell a young child to stop eating so much sugar, the child was addicted to it. Gandhi first went home and quit sugar himself, then came back to tell the child “quit eating sugar,” and the child did.

It is the same for anything else we want to see changed in the world, we must first attain whatever we would like to see within ourselves. If we want to see peace, we need to find peace, feel peaceful, and not let anything shake our feeling of peace, no matter how difficult the situation is.

Through an inner practice we can achieve this state. Not only through meditating, but also by an active process of switching the emotional state we might be used to living in. When something triggers us, giving an honest assessment as to why that bothered us and what is going on underneath that.

Then we have done our good service in bringing more peace to the world and we will reflect it in every interaction we have with others.
